Children should see the dentist for routine dental exams and cleanings at least twice per year, just like adults. This should begin around the time they turn one year old or when their first tooth grows in, whichever happens first.
Some dental issues are more or less unavoidable, but tooth decay can usually be prevented by implementing a few different practices:
- Ensure that your child is brushing properly (and frequently!) and schedule regular pediatric dental exams and cleanings.
- Fluoride treatments help strengthen tooth enamel, which helps the teeth become less prone to tooth decay.
- Dental sealants are clear coatings that cover teeth and prevent harmful bacteria from collecting and causing damage.
Baby teeth definitely matter! Even though your child will begin losing their baby teeth around age six, their baby teeth should be taken care of with a proper at-home oral care routine and pediatric dental exams. Creating good habits at a young age will only help your little one in the future!
You may be surprised to learn that orthodontic consultations can take place as early as seven years old. Your child might not receive braces at that point in time, but we recommend scheduling orthodontic consultations earlier rather than later whenever possible.
Monte Vista Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics accepts patients from zero to eighteen years old! We will be more than happy to work with your child well into their teen years.
For starters, pediatric dentists tend to love working with kids! Taking your child to a pediatric dentist ensures that your child will be taken care of by someone who is gentle and patient with young children. Pediatric dentists also attend several years of additional training after dental school to become pediatric dentists, so they are well-equipped to cater to the unique needs of children.
If your child has a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or broken tooth, contact our office immediately. We offer emergency dental services to provide prompt and effective care for urgent dental issues.
Yes, dental X-rays are safe for children. We use digital X-rays, which emit significantly less radiation compared to traditional X-rays. X-rays are an important diagnostic tool that helps us detect issues that may not be visible during a regular dental exam.
It's normal for children to feel anxious about dental visits. To help your child overcome fear of the dentist:
- Start dental visits early to familiarize them with the dental environment.
- Use positive reinforcement and praise to create a positive association with dental care.
- Read books or watch videos about visiting the dentist.
- Stay calm and positive to set a good example for your child.
Fluoride treatments help strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay. Regular fluoride treatments can significantly reduce the risk of cavities and improve overall oral health.
